| I am building a pirate ship out of an old 17' foot wooden boat. I'm using some 2" diameter posts for my masts. This will not be put in water, it's a prop for this year's Talk Like a Pirate Day and Halloween. I would like to keep the ship around, though, for future use, but I want to collapse the masts when not in use. My idea was to put the masts on some kind of hinge and have them connect by rope. Then I can pull the rope (and with it the masts) and attach them, then detach when I'm done. Ideally, I'd have about 1.5 to 2 feet anchored to the bottom of the boat and about 8 feet of mast total. I was also thinking I could use a 3'-4' chunk of rigid EMT as a sleeve that could slide down when the mast is up to relieve any strain on the hinge. I've done some research, and have found something called a tube hinge. However, this appears to be for tents and canopies and max out at 10mm. They are also almost $100 each. Anyone have any ideas of what to look for pre-fabbed, or another idea of how I can accomplish this? Here is a picture of the tube hinge I found: [link] [comments] |
