Nikolai Myaskovsky was born in Novogeorgievsk (now Modlin, Poland) and spent his career as a professor at the Moscow Conservatory. He composed twenty-seven symphonies and thirteen string quartets, working throughout the Soviet period. His Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 44, was dedicated to David Oistrakh.
