DAE (not from the US) wonder why all the malls in there are quite literally abandoned? Can somebody explain this to me?

For the past few days ive been seeing tiktoks about malls in America and they creep me out a little bit. Malls there only have like 2-3 stores open out of DOZENS and its honestly weird. Like why? Isnt the purpose of a mall to go and see you have lots of options from which to buy?
