Miami's Metrorail (top) and Metromover (bottom) running in close parallel, nestled against the Downtown Miami skyline at Government Center station, c. 1986. The vehicles are shown here sporting their classic 1980s green-and-blue striped livery.

Metromover service launched on April 17th of 1986, complementing the Metrorail rapid transit system, which had begun service two years prior in 1984.

While Metrorail was designed to transport passengers between suburban Miami, the Miami International Airport and central Miami, the Metromover was intended for short distance travel within the Downtown and Brickell areas. In 1994, the Metromover network expanded with the opening of the Brickell and Omni loops.

The Metromover was the first fully-automated people mover in the United States. The two systems connect at Government Center station, a multi-level hub located at the western edge of Downtown Miami, and Brickell station, located further south.
