How can I, as a guitarist, make my bass player's life easier?

2 weeks ago 23

I started jamming with some musicians in my city pretty much just as a hobby. I play guitar and write a lot, and maybe we'll gig in the future, but we're all amateurs in our 30s who just enjoy this. I swap vocals with the bassist a lot because ironically I have a pretty deep voice and he's a good tenor. We write together sometimes but generally I'm doing the bulk of that. I don't think that's a point of contention because they both seem genuinely interested in what I'm working on after we practice covers and often have cool suggestions

I have a great relationship with the bassist and drummer but I just get the impression they like what I write but find my playing at least a little bit frustrating. I don't think my sense of rhythm is that bad but I'm definitely the weakest musician here. They're both very polite, shy people and the stakes are low. Chatting afterwards they just say it's all good and not to worry, but I don't want to make them feel that I'm not taking their time seriously when we're all doing this instead of something else on a Friday evening after work, and often just playing dross that I wrote.

I've been practicing with a metronome and will put this in a drumming subreddit as well. I'm just wondering what lessons you'd love a guitarist to Get that we tend not to have learned
