I changed careers in my late 20’s. Went back to school and “pulled myself up from my bootstraps,” it was miserable….but I did it. AMA.

I graduated HS in 2013, didn’t get into the military (medical) and dropped out of University days before move-in day because my parents fessed up that they couldn’t afford to help me. I’ve worked in retail, medical billing & coding, real estate (administrative assistant and agent services coordinator), marketing, sales, and a litany of admin jobs from various industries. Most recent endeavor while going back to school was administrative assistant in divorce litigation and I did that for 5.5 years. A disgruntled client called me and said I was “never going to be anything more than a useless, stupid fucking receptionist” and my boss essentially agreed by having nothing to say let alone a “sorry he said that to you.” So I applied to colleges that night. I was 26 when I went back to school, working full time and going to class full time (21-27 credits per semester).

I got my degree in May of this year, in Environmental Science concentrating on Soil Science and Hydrology with a minor in Biology. I took a few months off to decompress and relax, now I’m a Geologist for a civil engineering firm.
