5/6 string basses arent more complicated/scary to play compared to 4, strings are still tuned the same and scale shapes apply the same, and ultimately you learn what you play on, so if you want that to be your first bass to learn on, then do it!
Obviously within a band, you should conduct and play in a way that cohesive to creative desires and wants, but I think when it comes to be a musician especially, seeing what you can put your bass to the limits of can just open up possibilities. A good bass player does need to know when you need to just play root notes, but I think it goes the other ways, in also knowing to do more then that. Embrace being a bassist, you dont have to just be the person who couldn't play guitar.
